About this course

This course will provide you with the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed for a career in sports coaching or progression to a full degree. You will be given the opportunity to explore different coaching, teaching and learning styles and how these are used in coaching practice throughout this two year course.

You will be able to develop a range of coaching skills along with other areas such as psychology, nutrition and performance analysis and understand how to apply these effectively in a wide range of sporting environments.

What will I learn?

The structure of the course focuses strongly on the area of sports coaching and aims to introduce you to a range of areas such as:

  • Principles of Sports Coaching
  • Applied Sports Coaching
  • The Evolution of Sports Development
  • The Sport and Leisure Industry
  • Managing Health and Fitness
  • Physical Activity, Lifestyle and Wellbeing
  • Analysis of Sports Performance
  • Managing Sports Development

In the second year you will be required to undertake work experience related to sports coaching or sports development. You will also undertake an individual research project, which will allow you to engage in an in-depth study of an area of particular interest or relevance to yourself. There are no examinations.

Entry requirements

At least 4 GCSEs at grade C or above, including English, Maths and Science (or equivalent Level 2 qualifications) plus one or more of the following:

  • 48 UCAS points from an appropriate Level 3 vocational programme (e.g. BTEC National Diploma) or GCE AS/A2 level or a 6-unit vocational A Level.
  • Success in an Access to Higher Education course (included a significant element of Science and/or Geography)
  • Formally assessed outcomes acquired through APEL.

Where English is not the applicant's first language an IELTS score of 6 or equivalent qualification will normally be required.

Study, assessment and qualifications

Classroom study sessions are supported by guest speakers and visits to industry settings, trade fairs and seminars. 

Assessment is conducted through written work and practical demonstrations of working practices. 

Video evidence may be required for elements of these assessments. Feedback of the assessment outcomes will be provided in writing and / or verbally upon the completion of each assignment task

Additional costs and information

The cost of this course is £4,500 per year.

What could I do next?

The course may lead to a career in a range of sporting occupations including sports coaching, sports development and teaching. Alternatively, you may also choose to extend your studies by taking a top-up degree in one of the following areas: sports coaching, coach education, sports development, teacher training, sports science or physical education.

The College’s Adult funded courses and apprenticeships prior to 1st May 2017 and apprenticeships with non-levy paying employers post 1st May 2017, are funded by the Education and Skills Funding Agency and part financed by the European Union through the European Social Fund (ESF). ESF supports activities to extend employment opportunities and develop a skilled workforce.
