Level 3 Science Manufacturing Technician Apprenticeship
About this course

This new L3 Science ManufacturingTechnician Standard replaces the old SASE Advanced apprenticeship. Typically 30 months in duration, this new Standard is delivered in three phases:

  • The first phase is Level 2 Foundation. This is when you learn the appropriate basic practical skills and theory.
  • The second phase is Level 3 Development. Here you will consolidate and further enhances your skills and is prepared for the end point assessment.
  • This end point assessment is the final phase. In order to complete the Level 3 Science Manufacturing Standard you must pass the end point assessment. This is made up of a practical observation (Synoptic) at thier place of work, a professional discussion about work and the study they have done, and a Scenario case study. The Level 3 Science ManufacturingTechnician Standard is graded at either Pass, Merit or Distinction grade.
What will I learn?

Science manufacturing technicians work in a wide range of companies, including, chemical, primary and secondary pharmaceutical, biotechnology, formulated products and nuclear manufacturing. As a science manufacturing technician, you will operate the systems and equipment involved in the production of products. You may work in varied conditions including wearing specialist safety equipment, shift work and on sites running 365 day operations. Many companies operate under highly regulated conditions and a premium is placed on appropriate attitudes and behaviours to ensure employees comply with organisational safety and regulatory requirements.

Science manufacturing technicians are expected to work both individually and as part of a manufacturing team. They are able to work with minimum supervision, taking responsibility for the quality and accuracy of the work they undertake. They are proactive in finding solutions to problems and identifying areas for improving their work environment.

As a Science Manufacturing Technician, you will be able to:

  • Both independently and within a team, start-up a manufacturing batch or continuous process in line with appropriate Standard Operating Procedures, understanding the principles of operation.
  • Both independently and within a team, shut down/complete a run of the manufacturing batch or continuous process in line with appropriate Standard Operating Procedures, understanding the principles of operation.
  • Work safely in a science manufacturing environment, understanding personal responsibility for Health, Safety and the Environment and principles of risk management.
  • Understand and follow quality procedures to meet the requirements of quality standards relevant to the workplace.
  • Understand the internal and external regulatory environment, relevant to the sector and the employer and comply with regulations proficiently.
  • Control and monitor a process or plant and equipment, effectively, efficiently and securely, and resolve problems or correct abnormal conditions.
  • Complete documentation relevant to the manufacturing process including relevant calculations.
  • Understand the business environment in which the company operates, including personal role within the organisation, ethical practice and codes of conduct.
  • Participate in continuous performance improvement.
  • Develop and apply theoretical knowledge of relevant science and technology and its application to the required sector & job role.
Entry requirements

Typically 5 GCSEs at grade C or higher, and ideally, grade B in Mathematics, English and science, or equivalent and/or relevant experience.

Study, assessment and qualifications

In order to complete a Level 3 Science Manufacturing Standard, you must attain a number of qualifications and pass the end point assessment.

You will also attain in the Foundation phase, the following qualifications:

  • •Foundation Knowledge - Level 2 Award in Aseptic Services
  • •Level 3 IOSH Working Safely
  • •Foundation Competence - Level 3 NVQ3 Mandatory unit in Health & Safety

In the Development phase you will attain the following qualificatiions:

  • •Development Knowledge - BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Applied Science
  • •Development Competence - NVQ3 Diploma in Labortory Technician (LATA)

Although not a qualification you must also collect evidence to prove that you have demonstrated throughout the 30 months, the correct and appropriate behaviours.

Throughout the course, a Wiltshire College Engineering Assessor works in partnership with the Employer, in supporting, advising and guiding you as an apprentice.

Additional costs and information

On completing The Science Techinicians Standard, you will meet the professional standards of the Science Council for registration as Technician (Tech).

What could I do next?

On completing The Science Manufacturing Techinician Standard, the natural progression would be onto a Level 4 Higher apprenticeship Framework or Standard. Other forms of progression could be:

  • HNC Qualification
  • Foundation Degree Qualification
  • Industry relevant qualifications
