About this course

Plumbing and heating is an ever developing industry, which requires qualified specialists to carry out work safely and effectively.

A highly competitive industry, employees work with a wide range of materials and technologies from domestic boilers to advanced welding techniques and computerised control systems.

Job roles can include installing sanitation and heating systems, servicing boilers, laying drainage pipes and even working with environmentally friendly technology such as solar water heating and rain water harvesting.

As a level 2 apprentice you will be involved in the installation and maintenance of plumbing systems, for example:

  • Baths
  • Pipework
  • Drains
  • Radiators
  • Heating systems
What will I learn?

Intermediate Apprenticeships in Plumbing and Heating can include training in a wide range of units including:

  • Safe Working Practices
  • Environmental Protection Methods
  • Scientific Principles within Mechanical Engineering
  • Site Preparation and Pipework Fabrication
  • Domestic Cold and Hot Water System
  • Installation and maintenance
  • Central Heating system installation and maintenance
  • Rainwater system installation
  • Ground drainage and more.
Entry requirements

Minmimum GCSE grade C in Maths and English.

All applicants will be required to pass initial assessments in Maths, English and ICT and an additional entrance test.

Study, assessment and qualifications

An intermediate apprenticeship in Plumbing and Heating usually takes a minimum of two years to complete.

This apprenticeship requires you to attend college for one day per week.

To assist you during your apprenticeship, you may be required to purchase some equipment and resources to support you during your course.

What could I do next?

On completion of your apprenticeship you can progress onto advanced level 3 Plumbing and Heating apprenticeship where you will experience working with gas fuel boilers, vented and unvented cylinders, installing, commissioning and maintaining heating systems.
