The Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Veterinary Nursing provides progression opportunities to students who work or want to work as Veterinary Nurses in the Veterinary Nursing sector.

It is delivered over three years and is designed to support the preparation of veterinary nurses for professional registration on the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Register of Veterinary Nurses.

It is mandatory for those seeking entry to the RCVS Register to be in possession of an ‘approved qualification’. The Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Veterinary Nursing falls into this category.

What will I learn?

The Animal Nursing Assistants and Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Veterinary Nursing qualifications are delivered at the Lackham Campus by a qualified, registered and experience team, who have many years of Veterinary Nursing and teaching experience.

Students will have access to a range of quality veterinary related resources, Blue Cross rehoming centre and a wide range of exotic and domestic animals on to support practical handling assessments.

The qualification has been developed for students seeking a specialised qualification in animal nursing, with the overall aim being to prepare students for a career in animal care or Veterinary Nursing, based within a Veterinary Practice.

Entry requirements

Before undertaking this qualification, learners must hold a minimum of five GCSEs or standard grade passes at grade C or above including English language, mathematics, a science subject and two further subjects or equivalent qualifications at Level 2 or higher.

Learners must have access to suitable work experience in a clinical veterinary practice. This may be on the basis of paid employment (e.g. apprenticeship) or an unpaid placement.

Study, assessment and qualifications

Students need to complete a total 1,290GLH which will be divided between classroom-based learning and work-based learning over the course of 3 years.


Candidates must complete all of the assessments for the qualification which include:

  • Portfolio of evidence (Central Skills Log)
  • Centre devised assignments
  • Centre devised multiple choice exams
  • Centre devised short answer exams
  • Practical exam (OSCE)
