About this course

This online distance-learning course is tailored to work around your busy life style and provides you with the flexibility to enrol anytime throughout the year. Supported by the Pet Industry Federation, the aim of this course is to standardise dog-walking practices within the industry.

You will need to complete 8 hours online learning after which you will attend a 4 hour practical assessment session within the animal centre at our Lackham land-based campus.

This qualification is ideal if you are looking to either:

  • Start up a Dog Walking business
  • Train existing staff and/or franchisees’
  • Continued Professional Development (CPD)
  • Adding accreditation to existing business and dog walking practitioners within the animal industry
  • Looking to refresh your current theoretical and practical skills or to enhance your CV

If you are looking for a career within the animal care industry, then this is qualification is aimed at you. Working with animals is extremely rewarding, but it can require long hours, with dedication and enthusiasm for the role. This qualification is suitable if you are 16 years old or over.

You will gain the practical skills and knowledge that are important for working as a competent dog walker. You could also progress to further learning and training in this area.

What will I learn?

Soon after you have enrolled, underpinning units will be released as you work your way through the course.

This qualification covers the skills you will need to progress to work as a dog walker. Mandatory content covers:

  • roles and responsibilities of a professional dog walker
  • legislation and Codes of Practice
  • breeds and behaviour
  • walking and controlling a dog
  • problems, injuries and emergencies

Once you have completed and achieved the underpinning theory units, you will need to attend a 4hr practical session at the Lackham campus. The practical takes place on a Sunday, where you will meet other students who are completing the course and will cover all the practical elements and assessments.

There are no formal entry requrements for this course.

Study, assessment and qualifications

To achieve this qualification, you need to complete 8hrs online learning and attend a 4hr practical lesson within the animal centre at the Lackham land based campus.

The assessment for this qualification will require you to achieve one to one practical assessment with oral questioning.

Additional costs and information

There are no additional costs associated to this qualification as all learning resources (including dogs) will be provided to you by your tutor.

You are expected to wear appropriate PPE when attending the practical session with includes;

  • Work boots or wellingtons (trainers are not permitted)
  • Polo shirt (shoulders must be covered)
  • Rain coat/all-weather jacket
  • Jeans or dark coloured work trousers (no torn jeans, leggings or fashion trousers)
  • No body piercings and hair tied back

Achievement of this qualification demonstrates to employers or the public that you have the practical skills and knowledge they are looking for when recruiting/seeking the services of a dog walker.
