About this course

Are you interested in developing your drawing skills and in painting with watercolours? If so, our course will help you to do this. You don't need any previous experience as our tutor caters for all abilities providing a high degree of individual help and attention.

All you need is enthusiasm and a willingness to experiment with different techniques!

What will I learn?

The aim of the course is to help you to develop your observational skills and stimulate your creativity while exploring different techniques in both drawing and watercolour painting.

On completion, you should be able to:

  • Use pencil for creating shading using hatching and cross hatching techniques
  • Demonstrate an understanding of tone and perspective
  • Demonstrate a familiarity with different wash techniques
  • Use colours to express emotion

The following topics will be covered during the course:

  • Drawing Techniques - using pencil, coloured pencil, charcoal and pastel to develop gradations of tone created by shading, hatching and cross hatching
  • Wash Techniques - flat and graded washes, wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, creating highlights, textures and effects
  • Observational Skills - developing observation skills to gain a deeper understanding of what we see
  • Composition - visual balance; positive and negative shapes
  • Colour Mixing - the transparent, opaque and staining qualities of watercolour
  • Subjects - a broad subject range will be covered including still life, landscape, architecture, figures and sketching on location.

There are no entry requirements associated with this course.
Study, assessment and qualifications
Assessment is informal, based on your personal targets and the learning outcomes and will be undertaken regularly with you by the course tutor. There are no final qualifications associated with this course.
Additional costs and information

Most materials and equipment will be provided by the college, but where requested by the tutor during the course you will need to provide additional equipment.

You should bring with you drawing pencils (HB, 2B & 4B) and a putty rubber to the first session, as well as any other drawing and watercolour painting equipment you may already have.

You may also wish to bring some small change for tea/coffee refreshments.

Please note that there is no parking at the Methuen Centre, Corsham. The closest car park is in the High Street, adjacent to The Methuen Arms. There is a charge for parking.
