About this course

If you have an interest in sewing and would like to make a garment, roman blinds and/or curtains or even some soft furnishings but are not sure where to start, this is the course for you. Beginning with the basics, you will learn all aspects of making your chosen project to help you develop your skills and knowledge in creating your own projects.

Creativity is actively encouraged as is the sharing of information and ideas, so those wishing to improve their skills are also welcome. This is a great opportunity for you to get out and meet with people who have a similar interest.

What will I learn?

On completion you should be able to:

  • Demonstrate you have developed new or existing skills and knowledge and improved your confidence in producing your chosen project
  • Demonstrate you have learnt basic techniques of making your chosen project
  • Measure and cut using imperial or metric measurements
  • Understand how different materials work together
  • Attach linings and inter linings for curtains/roman blinds
  • Demonstrate invisible hand sewing
  • Demonstrate you can produce one or more items following the given methods and instructions to a professional finish

The following topics will be covered during the course:

  • The basic techniques of machine and overlocking sewing
  • How to use techniques to provide a professional finish
  • How to measure, cut and check throughout construction using imperial and metric measurements
  • Invisible hand sewing
  • Understand a range of suitable patterns, materials, zips, heading tapes, linings, interlining and where to source them
  • Attaching linings and interlinings (curtains/roman blinds)
  • How and when to use different stitches, threads and tensions on your sewing machine for different materials.

There are no entry requirements for this course.

Study, assessment and qualifications

Assessment is ongoing and informal, based on personal targets with learning outcomes assessed throughout the course by your tutor.

Additional costs and information

You will need to bring all your own equipment and materials such as:

  • Sewing machine
  • Materials / Linings
  • Heading tapes/zips
  • Threads and notions (buttons/elastic etc)
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Needles

A steam iron and board will be available for use.  Your tutor will advise of specific requirements for your personal project.
