About this course

This 1 day, classroom based course is for those currently working, or seeking work, as the person responsible for selling, or authorising the sale of alcohol, in licenced premises or other venues where alcohol is sold for consumption on or off the premises.

Achievement of this qualification is a pre-requisite of applying for a Personal Licence, which enables you to operate both legally and responsibly.

What will I learn?
Successful completion will enable you to understand:
  • The roles, responsibilities and functions of licensing authorities, their objectives and the value of partnerships in promoting these objectives
  • The application process, including purpose and period of validity, rights and legal duties of a personal licence holder and penalties for failing to comply with the law
  • The roles and responsibilities of the Designated Premises Supervisor (DPS)
  • The strength of alcohol and its effect on the body
  • The protection of children on licenced premises
  • Prohibitions and exemptions and the powers of the police and other authorities in relation to licenced premises and licensable activities
  • Temporary Event Notices; Operating Schedules; Rights of Entry; suspension and closure of licenced premises; unauthorised licensable activities
Entry requirements

You must be aged 18+ to attend this course and be able to provide photographic “acceptable proof of identification” to be able to complete the exam, from the following list:

  • Valid passport (all nationalities acceptable)
  • Signed UK photo card driving licence
  • Valid Warrant Card issued by HM Forces, Police
  • Other photographic ID card e.g. student/employer ID (must be current employer); travel card
Study, assessment and qualifications
A workbook will be sent to you prior to the start of the course. We strongly recommend that you read the workbook in order to prepare for this intensive course and exam.

The exam takes place following the course and consists of a multiple choice questionnaire lasting 1 hour. The pass mark is 28 correct answers out of 40.
Additional costs and information

Fees include Licencing Course Book, exam and refreshments. VAT is not applicable.  Lunch is available to purchase from the Campus refectory.
