About this course

The Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship programme, leading to a B.A. (Hons) degree in Business and Management Practice, is delivered in partnership with Oxford Brookes University.  This course provides a practical business education programme over three years with up to a further year for the End Point Assessment for those employees who wish to study at Higher Education level in their local area whilst continuing to be employed within their organisation.

The programme is designed for chartered managers who can take responsibility for people, projects, operations and / or services to deliver long-term organisational success with the professional recognition of their ability to deliver impact, behave ethically and demonstrate their commitment to continual learning and development.

The occupational profile of prospective applicants is expected to be that of professional managers in the private, public or third sector and all sizes of organisation. Specific job roles may include Manager, Senior Manager, Head of Department, Operations Manager or those with significant management responsibilites.

Furthermore, the programme is designed specifically for:

  • Professional Managers capable of managing complexity and delivering impact at a strategic and / or operational level with management and leadership responsibility for setting and delivering organisational objectives through a wide range of functions.
  • Professional Managers who want to develop fully all aspects of their management and leadership skills, knowledge, self-awareness and behaviours. These include strategic decision making, setting direction and achieving results, building and leading teams, clear communication, developing skills and motivating others, fostering inclusive and ethical cultures, leading change, project management, financial management, innovation, risk management and developing stakeholder relationships.

Although the degree element of this capprenticeship is taught at Wiltshire College, you will also be able to access many of the learning and support facilities at Oxford Brookes University as well as those of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI).


What will I learn?

The aim of this course is to support and develop your career in the areas of Business and Management.  The course explores each of these strands progressively whilst maintaining a holistic view of business within various contexts. 

The Business strand introduces you initially to the scope and functions of business and gradually develops your understanding of the internal and external environment in which businesses operate.  The Management strand takes basic management concepts and theories to a contemporary and practical level and integrates organisational behaviour aspects with management and decision making.

On this course, you will explore business and management issues and problems that are set in realisitc contexts which allows theory to be looked at through interesting and challenging situations marrying critical enquiry with practical insights.


You will benefit from university level teaching with tutors who will ensure that you get the help and support you need to get the most from your studies and you will put theory into practice by using your current role at work to reflect upon the module content and to fulfil some of the assessment criteria. 

A college assessor will be assigned to support your portfolio, triangulating the elements studied at college, embedding and supporting End Point Assessment (EPA) requirements and supporting the identification of additional evidence within the work place.

Within your first year, you are introduced to areas including criticality and academic writing in addition to developing a portfolio to support your professional development. In the second year, you will focus on research skills and developing your skills of enquiry in preparation for your final year Work Based Project.

Throughout the apprenticeship, you will collect ‘show case’ work place evidence to build your portfolio at each level before accessing your End Point Assessment in year 4.


Entry requirements


The typical duration for this apprenticeship is 4 years but will depend on the previous experience of the apprentice.

Entry requirements:

Individual employers will set the selection criteria for their Apprenticeships. 

Most candidates will have A Levels (or equivalent) or existing relevant Level 3 qualifications and English, Maths and ICT will be required to be demonstrated at a minimum of at Level 2.

Other relevant or prior experience may also be considered as an alternative.


Study, assessment and qualifications

Successful apprentices will achieve a B.A. (Hons) degree in Business and Management Practice and full chartered membership of the CMI incorporating vocational and academic elements.

Apprenticeship learners will be expected to work on degree assessments, projects and collate evidence from their work place during working hours to support 20% off the job training.  Attendance at college will be for one day a week during the length of the degree programme with up to a further one year required for the completion of the End Point Assessment (EPA).

This course emphasizes active learning and facilitative teaching. It is an interactive course and so you will work in small groups and receive frequent and informal feedback.  It encourages a participative approach to learning including collaborative learning and peer review. 

Assessment plays a key role in ensuring that you develop and demonstrate the required knowledge and skills to complete your programme.  Each assessment is written so that you can show that you have achieved the learning outcomes for the module and for the whole programme. The range, type and timing of assessment has been carefully chosen to enable you to become independent and reflective learners.  Modules are assessed either by coursework and / or by examination and full details are given in the module descriptors.

Additional costs and information


This apprenticeship standard has a 3 year duration starting at Level 4 and finishing at Level 6 with a fourth year to access the End Point Assessment.

What could I do next?

As well as their apprenticeship at the end of year three, successful apprentices will achieve full chartered membership of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) incorporating vocational and academic elements (at the end of year four).  You may have the opportunity to study at a postgraduate level and access to promotional opportunities in the work place.

The College’s Adult funded courses and apprenticeships prior to 1st May 2017 and apprenticeships with non-levy paying employers post 1st May 2017, are funded by the Education and Skills Funding Agency and part financed by the European Union through the European Social Fund (ESF). ESF supports activities to extend employment opportunities and develop a skilled workforce.
