Level 3 Public Services
About this course

This course looks at the public service sector, its role in society and working in a public service organisation. You will also learn about social and political influences on the public services and begin to understand more about human behaviour and how it will affect your work. In addition, you will plan and undertake an expedition, develop leadership skills and learn about how to work in a team.

You will have an opportunity to discover a variety of outdoor activities and develop personal confidence through challenging yourself and achieving things that maybe you didn't think you were capable of, making you fully prepared for the unexpected demands of a uniformed public service career.

The activities will prepare you for the physical assessment necessary to get into the uniformed public services, as well as improving your personal fitness.

What will I learn?

The course is the academic equivalent of 3 full A-levels. You will study a variety of topics such as Government policies, citizenship and diversity, leadership skills, communication, team building, health, fitness testing and training.

You will study a range of units taken from the following-

  • Citizenship & Diversity
  • Understanding Discipline in the uniformed public services
  • Fitness testing and training for the uniformed public services
  • International Institutions and Human rights
  • War, Conflict and terrorism
  • Outdoor and Adventurous Expeditions
  • Skills for Land-based Outdoor and Adventurous Activities
  • Skills for Water-based Outdoor and Adventurous Activities
  • Crime and its Effects on Society
  • Command and Control in the Uniformed Public Services
  • Planning for major incidents
  • Police Powers & the Public Services
  • Behaviour in Public Sector Employment
  • Communication and technology in the uniformed public services
  • Security procedures within the public services
  • Practical team sports
  • Land navigation by map and compass
  • Leading in land based activities

Units are subject to change.

You will learn by a variety of different methods including formal reports, essays, presentations, residential activities and expeditions.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs grade A*-C, including English and Maths, or equivalent OR Merit or Distinction in a related subject at Level 2.

Study, assessment and qualifications

Students will be expected to study at home and in college and will be required to complete a number of assignments by deadlines.  There is continuous assessment through assignments. All students will be expected to participate in a relevant programme of work experience with the Armed forces.

There are no formal exams on the main qualification and you will be expected to study up to 19 units over two years.

The final qualification will be a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Public Services (Uniformed).

Additional costs and information

There will be a requirement to pay £200 for a variety of compulsory course related expeditions and outdoor activities. You will also require some personal items e.g. waterproof jacket and trousers/rucksack etc. for use during some of the expeditions and activities.

There will also be a requirement to purchase a uniform at a cost of approximately £150. This will be available for purchase from the college shop

Financial assistance may be available for learners who qualify. Learners should contact Customer Services at the college for further details and a bursary application form.

This is a physically demanding course that will require continual fitness training.

 

What could I do next?

This course can lead to further progression into higher education with a Public services Higher National Certificate (HNC) or Higher National Diploma (HND) level course of study at Wiltshire College.

Previous students have successfully completed Higher National Diploma qualifications at our Chippenham campus or have progressed to university to achieve Degree qualifications such as:

  • sports science
  • outdoor education

The course is also designed to prepare you for entry into a wide range of uniformed public services, for example:
