Level 1 Art, Design and Media
About this course

The Level 1 Diploma in Art, Design and Media is designed to provide you with an introduction to the creative sector. Enabling you to make informed future progression choices while developing and applying your knowledge and acquiring a range of relevant practical, communication and personal skills, necessary to progress onto a Level 2 Programme.

Over this one-year course, you will study a range of specialist subject areas including, printmaking, fine art, 3D design, digital design, drawing techniques and media studies. Enabling you to gain confidence in the work you produce and develop a broad range of design and digital skills.

What will I learn?

The UAL Level 1 Diploma in Art, Design and Media consists of seven units; six are mandatory and one unit is optional from a choice of two.

  • Introduction to materials, processes and skills in art, design and media
  • Introduction to contextual research in art, design and media
  • Introduction to communication skills in art, design and media
  • Solving 2D creative problems
  • Solving 3D creative problems

Solving time-based creative problems- at either L1 or L2

Entry requirements
  • 12 GCSE points or above, or equivalent    
  • A recent portfolio of work
  • A good reference 
  • A satisfactory interview
Study, assessment and qualifications

You will be expected to continue practising your artistic skills and developing your ideas in sketchbooks outside of class sessions. You will be mainly assessed through coursework. Functional and GCSE resits are assessed by exams.

Additional costs and information

There is a studio fee for the year of £100 which is payable at the beginning of the course.

What could I do next?

Successful completion of this course will enable you to progress onto a Level 2 course of study, such as the UAL L2 Art & Design or Media Diploma.
