About this course

Delivered at Wiltshire College & University Centre's Trowbridge campus, the level 5 Professional Certificate in Education in the Further Education and Skills sector and the level 6 Professional Graduate Certificate in Education in the Further Education and Skills sector are two year courses that have been designed to be innovative in its approach to teaching and learning through its content and assessment strategy.

These qualifications will provide trainees with the specialised skills and knowledge and a nationally recognised qualification that will give them a route to employment in a large and diverse sector.

Trainees on the programmes are supported to apply the learning from the programmes to their practice.

What will I learn?

The courses include modules in the following subjects.

Year 1:

  • Professional Development (part 1)
  • Theories of Learning

Year 2:

  • Professional Development (part 2)
  • Policy and Curriculum Issues
  • Research and Scholarship for the Development of Subject Specialist Expertise

Modules and course content are subject to change.

Entry requirements
  • A level 3 qualification in the subject you teach (or equivalent).
  • English at level 2 is required.
  • Teaching a minimum of 100 hours (50 hours each year).
  • Teach or train at least part of the time with groups of students.
  • Teach or train in a variety of contexts which could be different subjects or different levels over the 2 years.
  • Have a subject specific mentor who will be able to observe you teach and support your development in teaching your specialist subject.
  • To be considered for a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), you will need to have a 2.2 honours degree.

On successful completion of this course, you will achieve either a Professional Certificate in Education in the Further Education and Skills Sector or a Professional Graduate Certificate in Education in the Further Education and Skills Sector, accredited by the University of Greenwich.

Additional costs and information

Students may be required to attend an interview and the cost of this programme is £2,250 per year.

The programme requires a number of supportive visits to locations where you will be teaching.  For distances within 30 miles of any of the college's 4 main campuses, this will be included in your course fees.  For distances between 31 and 60 miles, further expenses at a rate of 40p per mile will be incurred and added to your course fees.

What could I do next?

On successful completion of the course, you will achieve a Professional Certificate in Education or a Professional Graduate Certificate in Education which will enable you to teach in a wide variety of teaching and training provision in the Lifelong Learning Sector.

At the end of the course, you will be able to apply for Qualified Teacher Lecturer Status which will require you to complete a QTLS portfolio of evidence.

You will also need an English and Maths qualification at GCSE at grade C (4) or above or an equivalent qualification.

Achievement of QTLS will also enable you to teach in the secondary school sector subject to appropriate specialist qualifications.
