About this course

Delivered at our Salisbury campus, the aim of the programme is to prepare the student for working in a forensic science or related environment. 

The Foundation Degree (FdSc) in Forensic Science with Foundation Year will give the student sufficient vocational skills and knowledge to be attractive to employers at the end of the five years study. 

Year one of the course lays the foundation for the modules encountered in year two, three, four and potentially five.

Overall, the course is intended to produce students who are ‘fit for work’ with the theoretical and practical knowledge which would benefit any employer in the forensic science field.

Year Five:

  • Professional Development Portfolio
  • Work Related Project
  • Forensic Evidence and the Legal System
  • Forensic and Criminal Psychology

Entry requirements

Applicants for the Foundation Year should normally have:

3 GCSEs in English, Science and Maths at grade C (4) or equivalent with level 3 qualifications 32 UCAS Tariff Points but not necessarily within science subjects

Study, assessment and qualifications

During each module, you will undertake assignments that count towards its assessment.  Assessment of all modules will be by both assignments and exams.

All modules are designed to enable you to engage in new areas of knowledge to acquire practical experience of a range of activities relevant to your employment within the forensic science industry and to encourage you to engage in critical reflection.

Teaching and Learning:

You will be given the opportunity to participate in lectures and workshops, plan and deliver presentations to your peers, research areas of relevance to the degree programme, critically evaluate the validity and implications of information and work with a wide variety of forensic science hardware and software.

Work Placements:

There is no Work Placement requirement for the Foundation Degree although there is a Work Related Project to be completed in year 5 of the programme which may require the student to liaise with a local company or organisation.

The cost of the Foundation Year is £3,000 per year and the cost of the Foundation Degree is £5,470 per year.

What could I do next?

On completion of this course, you may choose to continue onto a sixth year to give them the opportunity to attain a full honours degree which is planned for delivery at Bournemouth University from September 2021.
