About this course

Delivered at our Salisbury campus and franchised by Bournemouth University, the aim of the programme is to prepare the student for working in a health or nutrition environment. 

Students will be required to research current topics in their area of study and a specific module has been designed in the first year to help them understand how best to achieve this.

Overall, the course is intended to produce students who are ‘fit for work’ with the theoretical and practical knowledge which would benefit any employer in the fields of health and nutrition.

What will I learn?

The course includes modules in the following subjects:

Year One:

  • Introduction to the Principles in Health Care
  • Nutrition and the Social Environment
  • Mathematics for Science
  • Academic Writing Skills

Year Two:

  • Essential Biology and Physiology
  • Practical Laboratory Skills
  • Food Psychology and Behaviour
  • Nutrition across the Lifespan

Year Three:

  • Professional Development Portfolio
  • Work Related Project
  • Nutrition, Health and Disease
  • Policy and Practice in Health and Nutrition (Optional)
  • Food Chemistry and Nutrition (Optional)

Please note:

You will be required to study one of the two Optional modules dependent upon student numbers.

Entry requirements

Applicants should normally have:

  • 48 UCAS Tariff Points (normally to include Biology), e.g. 2Es or 1C at A Level or an AVCE Double Award at EE or BTEC / City and Guilds National Technical Diploma.

 

  • Additionally, candidates will normally be expected to present passes at grade C (4) or above in at least three other subjects (Double or Triple Science) at GCSE level or equivalent; passes at grade C (4) and above in English and Mathematics will be normally expected.

Or

  • Learning through experience demonstrated in portfolios or records of achievement and / or by specific learning tasks set at interview and confirmed by employer reference(s).

Or

  • A combination of academic and experiential learning to be considered on its individual merits.

Applicants whose first language is not English must offer evidence of qualifications in written and spoken English.  Acceptable qualifications are TOEFL 550, IELTS 6.0 or direct equivalents.

Applicants who do not have sufficient experience or formal qualifications may be eligible to attend the Foundation Year of their chosen Foundation Degree provided they meet the minimum entry requirements.

Study, assessment and qualifications

During each module, you will undertake assignments that count towards its assessment.  Assessment of all modules will be by both assignments and exams.

All modules are designed to enable you to engage in new areas of knowledge to acquire practical experience of a range of activities relevant to your employment within the Health and Nutrition industry and to encourage you to engage in critical reflection.

Teaching and Learning:

You will be given the opportunity to participate in lectures and workshops, plan and deliver presentations to your peers, research areas of relevance to the degree programme, critically evaluate the validity and implications of information and work with a wide variety of Health and Nutrition hardware and software.

Work Placements:

There is no Work Placement requirement for the Foundation Degree although there is a Work Related Project to be completed in year 3 of the programme which may require the student to liaise with a local company or organisation.

The cost of this programme is £5,470 per year.

What could I do next?

On completion of this course, you may choose to continue onto a fourth year to give them the opportunity to attain a full honours degree which is planned for delivery at Bournemouth University from September 2021.
