Delivered at Wiltshire College & University Centre's Lackham campus and franchised by Bournemouth University, the aim of the programme is to prepare the student for working in an environmental science or related environment.

The Foundation Degree (FdSc) in Environmental Science and Sustainability with Foundation Year will give the student sufficient vocational skills and knowledge to be attractive to employers at the end of the three years study. An additional fourth year onto a top up year to achieve a full BSc degree would place all the knowledge gained and skills developed to good use in the environmental science field.

Year one of the Foundation Year lays the foundation for the modules encountered in year two, three and potentially year four.

The number of students at any one year will be relatively small so all students will have maximum support from each module and personal tutor. This will inevitably be required as students learn new scientific and mathematical skills.

Students will be required to research current topics in their area of study and a specific module has been designed in the first year to help them understand how best to achieve this.

In the third year, a Work Related Project will allow the learner to apply their knowledge gained to a real world issue linked to their area of interest within the programme.

Overall, the course is intended to produce students who are ‘fit for work’ with the theoretical and practical knowledge which would benefit any employer in the environmental science field.

What will I learn?

After completing these three years, you will gain a Foundation Degree in Environmental Science and Sustainability with Foundation Year and you may choose to continue onto a fourth year to give you the opportunity to achieve a full Honours degree in Enviromental Science which is planned for delivery at Bournemouth University from September 2021.

The course includes modules in the following subjects:

Year One:

  • Foundations in Biology
  • Foundations in Chemistry
  • Mathematical Science Skills
  • Practical Science

Year Two:

  • Environmental Geography
  • Introduction to Ecological Science
  • Essential Biology for Environmental Science
  • Mathematics for Science
  • Academic Writing Skills
  • Practical Laboratory Skills

Year Three:

  • Professional Development Portfolio
  • Human Impact on the Environment
  • Work Related Project
  • Biodiversity and Conservation
  • Sustainability Energy and the Environment
  • Sustainability and Management in Practice

Please note:

Modules and course content are subject to change.

Entry requirements

Applicants for the Foundation Year should normally have:

3 GCSEs in English, Science and Maths at grade C (4) or equivalent with level 3 qualifications 32 UCAS Tariff Points, but not necessarily within science subjects.

Study, assessment and qualifications

During each module, you will undertake assignments that count towards its assessment.  Assessment of all modules will be by both assignments and exams.

All modules are designed to enable you to engage in new areas of knowledge to acquire practical experience of a range of activities relevant to your employment within the environmental science industry and to encourage you to engage in critical reflection.

Teaching and Learning:
