About this course

This 2 day course aims to ensure that operators are safe, competent and understand the legislative requirements when operating and maintaining a chainsaw.

It is suitable for the professional user, which can be defined as “anyone who anticipates seeking contractual work in professional forestry, amenity or utility arboricultural activities”.

What will I learn?

The course consists of Units 201 and 202, covering the following topics:

  • Working Safely
  • Maintenance of Chainsaw and Cutting System, including Operational Checks
  • Health and Safety Legislation and Industry Good Practice
  • Cross-cutting Timber Using a Chainsaw
Entry requirements
The minimum age for attendance on this course is 16 years.
Study, assessment and qualifications
Assessment will be by observations of practical skills and question and answer sessions to determine underpinning knowledge and understanding. It lasts 2.5 - 3 hours and is carried within 7 days of the training, subject to assessor availability.
Additional costs and information

It is desired that attendees bring the following items of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to the training and assessment:
- Chainsaw protection trousers
- Chainsaw protection boots
- Chainsaw protection gloves
- Chainsaw safety helmet (in date)
These must comply with current BS EN Standards. Please contact us if this is not available to you.

The purpose of the NPTC assessment is to prove occupational competence; further charges apply if re-assessment is required.

You are required to provide steel toe-capped safety boots and suitable outdoor clothing. A passport photograph is required at the start of the course for NPTC registration purposes.

NB: The assessment will take place after the training has been completed; this will be on a separate day. You will be sent the date in your joining instructions, 7 - 10 days before the courses start date.

What could I do next?
Upon successful completion of this course, you could progress onto the Level 2 Award in Felling and Processing Trees up to 380mm.
