About this course

This darkroom photography course is designed to teach you about traditional analogue photography, whilst working in a red lit darkroom.

The main focus will be on using a darkroom to develop black and white films and to print these black and white photographs using chemical processes and techniques.

What will I learn?

You will learn how different techniques in the darkroom can effect the outcome of your photographs and new ways of manipulating images in traditional ways.

There will be some tuition on using a SLR in the first session, but the main focus will be on using the darkroom itself. By the end of the course you will be able to use a darkroom confidently to produce interesting and exciting black and white negatives and prints.

The following topics will be covered during the course:

  • Using an 35mm SLR, including using aperture, shutter speed and ISO films speeds
  • Using an enlarger and photographic paper
  • Processing black and white film using specialist equipment and materials
  • Developing black and white photographs using specialist equipment and material.
  • Manipulating images by creating photograms, negative images and double exposures

On completion, you should be able to:

  • Understand and use a SLR 35mm film camera
  • Understand and use the processes and techniques of black and white darkroom photography
  • How to develop a film and prints in chemicals
  • Use an enlarger to print images
  • Apply a variety of printing techniques to light sensitive photographic paper

Study, assessment and qualifications
Assessment is informal, based on your personal targets and the learning outcomes and will be undertaken regularly with you by the course tutor.
Additional costs and information

There are no additional course costs.

You should bring with you:

  • A 35mm SLR
  • Tripod
  • Pre-shot black and white film

The following will be supplied by the college:

  • Kentmere 100 and 400 films (additional films can be purchased from the college if required)
  • Photographical paper (additional paper can be purchased from the college if required)
  • Darkroom equipment and chemicals
