About this course

The UK bee population is in sharp decline, so now is your chance to make a real difference for the future.

This course will give you the knowledge you need to set up and care for your very own bee colony. Learn about the natural history of bees, the equipment you need to succeed, how to open a hive carefully and exactly what you need to do to extract the honey!

You will also study colony management, possible diseases, health issues and how to prevent and control swarming.

Whether you have lots of land, a small garden or even an urban rooftop, you can set up and take care of your very own hive and benefit from harvesting your own honey!

What will I learn?

The aim of the course is to provide you with an introduction to the techniques of bee-keeping.

The following topics will be covered during the course:

  • Bee History - Queens, Workers and Drones, their life cycles and functions, basic anatomy and their different roles and duties
  • Colony Management and Disease
  • Swarms - why they occur, how to prevent and control them, first aid and how to care for a sting
  • Using your own hive - how to open a hive safely and carefully, and what you need to do next!

And on completion, you should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the natural history and ecology of the honey bee
  • Demonstrate an awareness of basic bee-keeping techniques
  • Demonstrate an understanding of bee-keeping equipment and apiary management
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the range of products derived from bee colonies
