About this course
If you would love to be able to draw and paint but do not think you could ever do it, or if you are someone who has had a go and would like to improve, why not give this course a try?

You can start from scratch or brush up on the basics - either way the aim of this step-by-step course is to help you establish the solid foundations of technique and observational skills that you will need to achieve a good standard of drawing. You will also benefit along the way from guidance from the tutor and other students, letting you in on a few tricks of the trade!


What will I learn?

The aim of the course is to equip you with the confidence and knowledge to improve your drawing skills.

On completion, you should be able to:

  • Understand relationships in scale and proportion
  • Demonstrate an improvement in pencil skills and in line and tone
  • Demonstrate an ability to visualise perspective
  • Distinguish between the work of Picasso, Pissaro and Pollock.

  • The following topics will be covered during the course:

  • Relationships - how to measure proportion and draw to scale
  • Line and Tone - sensitive line drawing; the analysis and rendering of tone including the vocabulary of mark making
  • Perspective - exploring simple perspective; the secret of ellipses
  • Negative Space - useful alternative ways of looking and drawing
  • Drawing the Figure
  • Drawing Portraits
  • Drawing Still Life
  • Composition
  • Portfolio assessment

    There are no entry requirements associated with this course.
    Study, assessment and qualifications

    Assessment is informal, based on your personal targets and the learning outcomes and will be undertaken regularly with you by the course tutor.  There are no final qualifications associated with this course.

    Additional costs and information

    You should bring with you an A4 cartridge paper sketchbook, a 3B pencil, a pencil sharpener and a putty rubber.
