About this course

What will I learn?

The course will cover the aerial operation of chainsaws using different techniques for delimbing trees.
Units include:

  • Risk assessment and emergency procedures
  • Equipment selection
  • Preparation and inspection
  • Chainsaw operation in the crown of the tree

On completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify, inspect and comment upon key parts of the equipment to be used
  • Prepare the equipment for use ensuring the safety of themselves, other people and the environment
  • Operate a chainsaw whilst maintaining a working position within the crown of a tree using a rope and harness
Entry requirements

Please DO NOT book this course unless you have previously achieved the following:

  • Award in Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross Cutting
  • Award in Felling and Processing Trees up to 380mm
  • Award in Accessing a Tree Using a Rope and Harness Including Aerial Tree Rescue Operations
Study, assessment and qualifications
Candidates will be assessed for the Award in Aerial Cutting of Trees using Free Fall Techniques. This is a practical assessment.  The first assessment is included in this price.  The purpose of the NPTC assessment is to prove occupational competence; further charges apply if re-assessment is required.   
Additional costs and information

You will need your own transport as the course takes place at Wiltshire College for half of the first day and is then at an alternative site for the rest of the course duration.

It is desired that attendees bring the following items of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to the training and assessment:

  • Chainsaw protection trousers
  • Chainsaw protection boots
  • Chainsaw protection gloves
  • Chainsaw safety helmet (in date)

These must comply with current BS EN Standards.

NB: The assessment will take place after the training has been completed; this will be on a separate day. You will be sent the date in your joining instructions, 7 - 10 days before the courses start date.
