About this course

This 3 day course, is for those whose role it is to meet the first aid requirements of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulation 1981.

Employers should select an employee who is physically fit, responsible and available to provide first aid in the work setting, in accordance with Regulation 3, Section 47 of the Approved Code of Practice, available from HSE Books, telephone number 01787 881165.

What will I learn?

You will learn about the following topics:

  • Situation management; communication, responsibilities and priorities
  • Managing an unconscious casualty; resuscitation, breathing, airway and heart massage
  • Treating minor injuries
  • Dealing with the effects of poisons, gases and fumes
  • Moving injured people
  • Avoidance of cross infection when treating wounds
  • Record keeping
  • Using and buying supplies for the First Aid Box
  • Duties of employers
  • Treatment of shock, burns and scalds, injuries to bones, muscles and joints and eye injuries
Entry requirements
There are no entry requirements associated with this course.
Study, assessment and qualifications

Assessment is based on a multi-choice paper followed by a short practical skills test.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive the HABC First Aid At Work Certificate, valid for 3 years.

Refresher courses are available for future attendance before your current certificate expires.

Additional costs and information

You will be sent a course book prior to the course and a minimum of 6 hours’ pre-course reading is recommended for you to benefit the most out of the course.

This is a 3 credit qualification, with a guided learning hour’s value of 24 and it has a minimum contact time of 18 hours, which is typically delivered via a 3 day course.

Candidates should be physically fit and are advised to wear comfortable, casual clothing suitable for the practical elements of the course.
