About this course

This course is primarily designed for those working with children and young people between the ages of 4-16 years in a variety of play environments.

Applicants must be currently working or volunteering in a play environment as learners must be able to show competence in both knowledge and skills in this sector.

What will I learn?

The Diploma is made up of a number of individual units, both mandatory and optional, each with a credit value. In order to gain the full diploma you have to achieve a total of 61 credits.

There are 12 mandatory units with a total credit value of 45, covering such areas as Playwork principles,the Play Environment, Safeguarding, Health & safety, Play theory and Supporting Childrens play.

The balance of credits will be made up from a number of optional units covering such areas as travel, food and drink, supporting children with disabilities and administration.

Your assessor will go through the options with you at your induction to ensure that your job role will cover the criteria required to achieve the units.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification but learners will need to be at least 16 years of age.

Study, assessment and qualifications

All units are internally assessed. Assessment enables the learner’s workplace practice to provide evidence for individual units as well as the whole qualification.

Methods of assessment could include:

  • Direct observations of learner’s practice
  • Inference of knowledge from direct observation of practice
  • Witness evidence
  • Recognition of prior learning
  • Reflection on own practice in real work situations
  • Workshops 1 day a month

Learners have 16 - 21 months to complete the Level 2 Diploma.

This is a "roll-on, roll-off" qualification so, provided you fit the required work based criteria you can join at any time.
