About this course

This qualification is aimed at staff working directly with children and young people in a setting whose main purpose is to provide children and young people with opportunities for freely chosen, self-directed play. You must be working in a Playwork environment.

Candidates will learn the necessary skills, knowledge and competence required to work in a supervisory role within the Playwork sector.

What will I learn?

As this qualification includes the Award and Certificate units, it will cover the knowledge and understanding from the National Occupational Standards and will require the learner to demonstrate the full application of this knowledge and understanding over a period of time in the workplace.

Qualification structure:

Award: learners will need to complete the first 3 units from the list of mandatory units

Certificate: learners will need to complete the first 9 units from the list of mandatory units

Diploma: learners will need to complete all of the mandatory units, as well as a further 19 credits from a range of optional units, covering such areas as budgets, travel, recruiting staff, marketing, and inclusive play

  • Understand how to safeguard the well being of children and young people
  • Understand the organisational framework of play
  • Understand how to support positive outcomes for children and young people
  • Understand the relationships in the play environment
  • Understand health, safety and security in the play environment
  • Understand how to plan for and support children and young people's self-directed play
  • Engage in personal development in health and social care or children's and young people's settings
  • Contribute to an organisational framework that reflects the needs and protects the rights of children and young people
  • Develop and maintain a healthy, safe and secure play environment for children and young people
  • Develop and promote positive relationships in a play environment
  • Plan for and support children and young people's self-directed play
Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification, however learners will need to be at least 18 years of age at the start of the course.

Candidates can access this qualification having previously gained the knowledge from the Level 3 Award in Induction to Playwork (QCF) and/or the Level 3 Certificate in Playwork (QCF) or as a direct route to the Diploma (NVQ).

Study, assessment and qualifications

All units are internally assessed. Assessment enables the learner’s workplace practice to provide evidence for individual units as well as the whole qualification.

This is a "roll-on, roll-off" qualification so, provided you fit the required work based criteria you can join at any time.
