About this course

This 10 week course covers the period of time between 1900 to today.  You will be taught by lecture and discussion, and some reading will be required between each session.  The course focuses on the transition between Modernism and Post-modernism, and other related issues that have influenced the type of Art we can see in galleries today.

What will I learn?

On completion, you should be able to:

  • Understand the principles that have affected the history of Art since 1900 to today
  • To recognise the major art movements associated with this period
  • Discuss how ideas, techniques and presentation methods have changed Art over the past 116 years

The following topics will be covered during the course:

  • Modernism, Post-modernism, Abstraction, Formalism
  • Dada, Surrealism, Cubism, Minimalism, Conceptualism, Pop Art, Contemporary Art, Abstract Expressionism
  • The impact of photography and film on Art
  • The impact of Marxism and Feminism on Art

Study, assessment and qualifications

Assessment is informal, based on your personal targets and the learning outcomes and will be undertaken regularly with you by the course tutor.
