About this course

This course will introduce you to a variety of holistic therapies, allowing you to experience their benefits and take away the knowledge and practical experience to use them safely at home.  Therapies covered include the use of aromatherapy oils, hand and arm massage, reflexology and Indian head massage.  The course will be very practical as you will watch demonstrations and practice techniques on each other.  No previous experience is necessary and techniques will be explained clearly, with assistance given as needed throughout the course.

What will I learn?

On completion, you should be able to:

  • Demonstrate  an understanding of the benefits of holistic therapies
  • Demonstrate an understanding of cautions and relevant health and safety
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the properties of essential oils and how to create a suitable blend
  • Perform various massage and reflexology techniques safely to enhance relaxation and wellbeing

The following topics will be covered during the course:

  • Aromatherapy – you will be introduced to a variety of fragrant essential oils, discovering their properties and benefits and how to blend oils safely
  • Massage – we will focus on hand and arm massage, with simple but highly effective techniques for relaxation
  • Indian Head Massage – massage of the upper back, neck, shoulders and scalp. This therapy is carried out through clothes, with the receiver seated on a chair, making it perfect to use at home, as no special equipment or couch is needed
  • Reflexology – pressure is applied to reflex areas on the feet (or hands) to promote wellbeing and relaxation.
Entry requirements

There are no entry requirements associated with this course - you do not need any previous experience or equipment to be able to learn the techniques.

Study, assessment and qualifications

There are no final qualifications associated with the course. Assessment is informal, based on your personal targets and the learning outcomes and will be undertaken regularly with you by the course tutor.

Additional costs and information

An additional £2 is payable to the tutor on the first session to cover the cost of oils.

You should wear loose comfortable clothing, such as a T shirt, and comfortable footwear.  If you have long hair please bring a hairband to tie hair up with.  Please bring a towel to the first session, drinking water and money for tea/coffee if desired.

Certain health conditions are contraindicated for massage and holistic therapies; if you have a medical condition and are unsure about your suitability for this course please contact the college prior to enrolling.
