About this course

This course is suitable for anyone aged 16 or older with an interest in operating in a caring role for older people who may already have a basic knowledge of dementia and/or dementia care.

It aims to provide learners with an understanding of the role of the care worker and provide an introduction to the practical skills and knowledge required enabling learners to develop and practice the skills required for progression in the sector.

Examples of job roles that would benefit from this course would be:

  • Care Assistants
  • Healthcare Assistants
  • Support Workers
  • Key Workers
  • Personal Assistants
  • Team Leaders
  • First Line Supervisors

This course would also suit privately employed or family member carers working in the following settings:

  • Residential
  • Community and primary care or acute health environments

What will I learn?

To achieve the Level 3 Award in Awareness of Dementia, learners must achieve 11 credits from the following 4 mandatory units:

  • Understand the process and experience of dementia
  • Enable rights and choices of individuals with dementia whilst minimising risks
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion in dementia care practice
  • Understand the administration of medication to individuals
Entry requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for this course.
Study, assessment and qualifications

Initial assessments are carried out online, through the Quals Direct E-learning Portfolio. Your initial assessment, interview and registration will take place at Wiltshire College, Lackham with 1 Tutorial after 3 months. Support by the assessor will provided on line.

It will take learners approximately 10 months (maximum) to complete the 4 core units, however this may be completed more quickly by some learners.

Upon successful completion of this course, learners will achieve the Level 3 Award in the Awareness of Dementia City & Guilds.
