About this course

This course is aimed at those who wish to learn new craft skills and art techniques in a relaxed atmosphere. The focus will be on the doing rather than the finished product and the learners will make choices about their designs for art, craft and garden.

What will I learn?

You will make choices about the products you make, which you can take home for yourself or for others. You will learn about expression through colour and design whilst exploring some famous paintings and take part in discussions. You will also learn about designing, making and maintaining a border or small area in the garden. On completion, you will have handled and used various materials and learned new art techniques.

The following topics will be covered during the course: These ideas will cover the year. Some ideas may change or develop according to the wishes of the class.

  • We will look at printing using a variety of methods and materials. The printed fabrics can be used to make items of your choice, such as cushions or tea towels. Those who do not wish to print could do some simple embroidery to decorate fabric. We may also do some fabric tie dye or batik for silk scarves or cotton T-shirts.
  • We will look at painting on glass or ceramics to brighten up everyday objects such as candle holders, vases or flower pots.
  • We will look at collage and decoupage for decorating items such as cards, keepsake boxes or picture or mirror frames.
  • We will use polymer clay to make jewellery, keyrings or fridge magnets. We will also try our hands at using air drying clay to make decorative plates or small bowls.
