Motorsport Engineering Level 3
About this course

This full-time, two-year course provides a qualification in the specialist area of Motorsport Engineering.

It is intended for students with a strong interest in motorsport and/or performance vehicles who wish to work in the Motorsport/Automotive industry.

This vocational Level 3 course can be an option to taking A levels after GCSEs, as it provides the opportunity for progression to Higher Education.

What will I learn?

Students on this course will gain knowledge of motorsport vehicles including chassis systems, engines, transmission and electrical/electronic systems. Engineering subjects relating to tools, measuring equipment, materials and fabrication are also included. Other areas studied include health and safety, motorsport event regulations and applied maths/science.

Entry requirements

2 GCSEs at grade C and 2 GCSEs at grade B, to include English language, mathematics and science, with mathematics at B.

Study, assessment and qualifications

This course is timetabled over three days per week at the Chippenham campus which includes a dedicated motorsport workshop. In addition, students will have opportunities to visit our Training Centre at Castle Combe racing circuit where the Wiltshire College Motorsport race team is based.

Assessment in the form of online and practical assessments and written assignments is carried out throughout teach academic year.

The final qualification is a IMI Level 3 Extended Diploma in Motorsport Vehicle Maintenance and Repair.

Additional costs and information

All students are required to wear a Wiltshire College Motorsport polo shirt whilst attending College. When engaged in workshop activities Wiltshire College Motorsport overalls must be worn in addition to safety footwear. Students will be supplied with eye protection and work gloves, as required.

As an important part of student’s introduction to the Motorsport industry they are required to pay for a visit to Autosport International at the NEC in January, the cost covering transport and entry into the event.

All clothing can be ordered and paid for in the Wiltshire College online shop, together with payment for the Autosport International visit.

Accommodation for students living outside Wiltshire is available at the Lackham campus (3 miles from Chippenham) but the College cannot provide transport between Lackham and Chippenham campuses.

The course will commence in September 2017 and complete in June 2018.

What could I do next?

Successful completion of the Level 3 course will allow entry (subject to progression criteria) on to the University of Bath Degree programme, consisting of a two-year Foundation Degree followed by a one-year “top-up” to achieve a BSc (Hons) Motorsport Engineering, based at the Castle Combe Training Centre.

Employment opportunities as a technician or junior engineer also exist in the Motorsport/Automotive industries.
