About this course

This one year ‘top-up’ course provides the opportunity to achieve a full Honours degree in Animal Science and Management, following appropriate Foundation Degree or Higher National Diploma completion. You will benefit from an advanced level of study that will provide a link into the industry, preparing you for postgraduate studies or employment within the industry in the UK and abroad. The Lackham campus provides a superb location for studying Animal Science and Management. Our Animal Resource Centre is home to a wide range of animals including invertebrates, conventional companion animals, reptiles and relatively exotic mammals such as wallabies, meerkats and lemurs. This resource, in combination with knowledgeable staff and extensive grounds, offers various possibilities for module study and dissertation research’.

In previous years, as part of the International Study module, learners have taken part in a study tour to Poland surveying large carnivores and experiencing current field research work. There are further opportunities to take part in more general international study tours, most recently to South Africa.

What will I learn?

The course includes modules in the following subjects:

  • Immuno-Epidemiology
  • Animal Psychology and Behaviour
  • Anthrozoology
  • Behavioural Ecology
  • International Study Tour
  • Field Biology and Conservation Management

Students are also required to complete an Honours Dissertation.

We have highly trained staff with considerable experience, who will help to support your progression. Our well-appointed laboratory resources and experimental/ research equipment are ideally suited to further your knowledge and understanding of the scientific theory, relating to the course subject matter. A well-equipped Library and Learning Resource Centre and excellent IT facilities are also available.

Entry requirements

Foundation Degree at pass level or HND with a merit profile in the broad study area of Animal Science and Management. Alternative HNDs or Foundation Degrees will be considered on an individual basis. Evidence of work experience is also required.

Where English is not the applicant's first language an IELTS score of 6 or equivalent qualification will normally be required.

There are additional costs associated with the BSc Hons top up, approximate prices are given below as a guideline.

  • Study tour to Poland approximately £500-750 including flights and accommodation
  • Recommended course books £50-70 for Anthrozoology (Open book exam)
  • Dissertation materials and binding £7.00

What could I do next?

Our students have progressed into a variety of exciting careers such as biology teacher, education officer for animal charities, field biologist and conservation volunteer organiser in Costa Rica. Others have gone on to complete post-graduate studies in biological sciences and PGCEs in primary, secondary and tertiary education.
